Music mastering is the final step in the production of a song. It’s where your tracks are given a finishing polish to make sure they sound their very best.
Taking place after you've finished mixing your music, mastering includes tweaking elements like volume levels, enhancing clarity, and ensuring consistency throughout the entire audio. The process ensures your music sounds as good as possible across different systems and devices, whether that’s through the highest quality speakers or cheap old headphones.
Mastering engineers and online tools fine-tune the audio, correct any imbalances, and add the finishing touches which prepare your music for release. In essence, mastering is like giving music a last quality check and glow up before it’s shared with the world.
Mastering enhances the overall sound quality of your tracks, ensuring your music is ready to be uploaded to Spotify, Apple Music and other major services. Our mastering process makes sure your songs meet all of the technical requirements set out by these stores - making your release process that little bit smoother.
Releasing unmastered music can hinder your growth as an artist. Unmastered tracks don't really tend to catch the ears of influential Spotify playlist curators, who often skip over tracks that lack that special sound, so giving them that professional finish that makes them way more likely to grab a curator's attention.
The decision to master your music is entirely up to you, but we'd strongly suggest doing so if you're serious about success in the industry.
To prepare your audio ready for mastering, start by polishing your mix as much as you can yourself. This means focusing on your track’s balance, EQ, and fine-tuning any effects you have added.
It’s also really useful to leave some headroom on your track, giving our mastering tool some room to tweak things. We suggest leaving around -3 to -6 dB to avoid clipping and digital distortion, and turn off any limiting, compression, or EQ on the master bus. Let the mastering tool take care of that.
Once you’ve done all these things, export your mix as either a WAV or AIFF file at the highest bit depth and sample rate you used during your recording - typically 24-bit/44.1 kHz or higher. Lossless files like these are the best audio formats to use as they won't sacrifice any of your music's data.
Tip: Leave at least one silent bar at the beginning of your song to allow for any additional noise caused by mastering processes.
Listen closely for any unwanted noises, like clicks and pops, and fix them before exporting. You might want to include any reference tracks that showcase the sound you’re going for too.
Finally, make sure your files are clearly labeled with consistent naming, including version numbers and track listing. Having this sorted out in advance is key to maintaining a smooth flow throughout your entire release, so correctly input all of your metadata to avoid any future archiving problems.
All of these steps help set up a seamless mastering process from start to finish. You can learn more about preparing your audio for mastering from our friends over at Masterchannel.
AI music mastering uses advanced algorithms and machine learning techniques to learn and replicate audio engineering decisions made by human mastering engineers.
When you upload a track to Ditto Music Mastering, the AI first analyses the track's audio properties, including loudness, frequency balance, dynamic range and more. It identifies areas that need improvements in order to bring it up to the quality of commercially-released music.
This gives you a master track that is consistent, high-quality and ready for distribution to all music streaming, social and download platforms - with final exports available in less time and at a much lower price than regular mastering services, although it may lack the nuances that a skilled human engineer brings to the table.
Mastering can affect a number of important audio and sound levels to boost a track’s overall quality and feel.
It adjusts the loudness to make sure the audio is neither too quiet nor excessively loud, maintaining an optimal level across various playback systems. Dynamic range - the difference between the softest and loudest parts - is also managed using tools like audio compression to prevent your track from sounding too flat or too dynamic. Frequency balance is refined through equalisation (also know as EQ) to make sure all elements from bass to treble are present in the mix.
Stereo width is also often enhanced to give the track a fuller, more immersive sound. Harmonic enhancement can be applied to enrich the tonal quality, and transient shaping might be used to refine the impact of percussive sounds. Noise reduction techniques might also be used to clean up any unwanted background noise. It all depends on the mix you upload in the first place.
Professional mastering engineers usually offer better precision, expertise and human touch that AI generally compete with. But the costs can run up quickly, which isn’t always ideal for artists on a tight budget. That's one of the reason 60% of musicians already claim to be using AI to make music in some capacity.
While AI mastering might not match every subtlety that a seasoned engineer would catch, it is much quicker and cheaper, while still significantly improving audio quality and optimising tracks for release. It works round the clock, allowing you to get your tracks mastered anytime you need, hitting tight deadlines and ultimately releasing new music more frequently.
The Ditto Music Mastering tool can be used across a wide range of music genres. It uses sophisticated algorithms that adapt to the specific characteristics and needs of any style of music. AI doesn't have any preferences towards genre, meaning you'll always receive consistent, high-quality results every time.
No matter if you're creating rock, rap, jazz, house or any other genre, the final master retains its intended tones alongside achieving a studio-quality and professional sound. Try it for free to see for yourself!
